Naoe Kanetsugu by Penguin Parade (Warning NSFW: +18)

Warning: This post contains +18 content, you have been warned.

I’ve had this wonderful looking figure sitting on my desk for well over a month now and I’ve not shown her to you all. That should be a crime :P . Heck I even had one figure overtake her in the review queue! Plus she’s cast-off done right, what was I thinking. Anyway without further delay I present to you Naoe Kanetsugu by Penguin Parade.

1920 x 1280 || 1920 x 1080

For those unaware of who Naoe Kanetsugu is she’s one of the supporting characters from Hobby Japans’ Samurai Girls (Hyakka Ryouran) series. It has received the anime treatment so I’d recommend giving it a watch if you want to find out more. US residents have access to streaming via The Anime Network I believe. Kanetsugu was probably one of my favourite characters from the anime, although I also liked Gisen and Charles. She’s initially introduced as a spy sent to snoop on Sen Tokugawa, one of the lead females in the series, and the ever increasing number of suspicious residents at her house. However Naoe (yeah I should be calling her Kanetsugu, but Naoe is shorter) soon ends up becoming the sworn enemy of male lead Muneakira Yagyu. She believes he has somehow enslaved Sen and the other girls, but we all know no male lead is capable of such feats. Her role then dissolves towards acting as comedic relief – usually ending up in goofy outfits or situations. That reminds me, I should really go pick up the Blu-Rays of this series. We actually got a Blu-Ray anime release in the UK  (much to the disapproval of the said publishers overtly vocal PR guy).

Onto the figure then. Naoe stands about 22cm tall at 1/8 scale, although 1cm of that is due to the thickness of her base. It’s odd, she’s the same scale as GSC Arsene but I perceive her as being much bigger. Naoe does have a wider base and a giant hammer, so maybe that’s why. Penguin Parade tend more towards making anime merchandise as opposed to figures, but in recent years they’ve managed to churn out a fair few such as Sousou from Koihime Musou, and Kuroko/Misaka from Railgun. Since Naoe is a character I enjoyed I decided to pick up their rendition of her. Granted she may not look like either the original artworks or anime version of her, but I still think she looks nice. Plus she’s the only cast-off Kanetsugu out there. On a side note I’m looking forward to Alters Naoe Kanetsugu & the Hobby Japan swimsuit version. She may end up being one of those characters I have multiple figures of in my collection.

All the trademarks of Kanetsugus’ character design are present and accounted for in this figure. Her giant Hammer, huge purple twintails, huge sake bottle, ‘Ai’ hair accessory – it’s all there. The keen eyed amongst you may have noticed there are a few minor details missing from her outfit. I’ll get on to them as I go through, but until then you can play spot the difference. Also feel free to let me know if I missed any in the comments section.

Her pose is really interesting and to me can be interpreted in a few different ways. The first looks as if she’s about to lift her hammer overhead and smash it into the ground. The second is a more seductive look, it wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination to picture a pole behind her instead of the hammer. From some angles it can even look as though she’s stretching.

Her hammer is huge – almost as big as Naoe herself. However the hammer barrel is a little barren in terms of texture. It should in fact be decorated with flower patterns. It’s a good thing the hammer is therefore positioned behind her and not really the main focus of the figure design, so it’s not that big a deal if you ask me. In terms of weight the hammer’s not too heavy since the head is hollow. For display you get a little piece of plastic to elevate the hammer off the base, basically just lifting the hilt closer to her left hand. You can rest the hammer happily on her base too, it just hides most of it behind her back. That’s another point if you’re playing the spot the difference game, the hammer is missing a chain at the end of the hilt.

True masters of the hammer always Super Pound the head.

Domo on the other hand, he Golf Swings his teammates.

The cast-off comes with some instructions – 2 sides of instructions! I must admit despite mocking them I ended up finding to be rather helpful. The little black and white photographs illustrated with arrows made intuitive sense without having to understand the written Japanese. First you need to remove her hammer. Simply pop the end of the hilt off and slide from her grasp. Her head is next to go, it simply lifts off. Her arms are on pivot-able joints so you can spin them round and round. They need to come off too so don’t get too carried away with the spinning.

Next you undo the string round her waist, simple enough. Undo the buttons on her shirt. Yes, buttons, on a figure  . Then you roll her top up and off over her head. The shirt is made out of a really flexible yet sturdy plastic. There’s no paint transfer or scratching either which is really cool. More manufacturers of cast-off figures should really give this material a go.

Anyway, removing her collar/tie from round her neck is next. Now the hardest part I found – pulling her in half about the waist. You may have noticed plastic wrapping under her skirt in all the above photos. That’s because I couldn’t get her to split in half initially. I gave up and just took photos as she was at this point, removing as much of the visible wrapping as possible.

Not a bad combo per-say, the skirt and no top is a good look. The string round her waist is also a nice touch, even if it does appear to be floating from some angles. For our spot the difference challenge there should have been bits of white material hanging off the string, but to be honest we’re becoming rather persnickety.

Her stockings/knee socks look really nice. The flower petals on the right hand side are neat. She is however missing an ‘Ai’ kanji on the left leg. Again it’s nothing major, just makes it look a little barren that’s all.

Ok pelvis, this is between you and me. You may have distracted me with the upper body cast-off, but I’ve not forgotten you.

After much tugging and wriggling she finally exploded in my hands – skirts went flying.

So here she is in her full cast-off glory. Okay so there’s an orange stain round her hips where I was struggling to separate her, but the rest looks nice.

I decided to be real classy and give her the tie back. ;)

I love the way her back arches – super sexy.

Is it just me or do her arms look really thin compared to the rest of her body?

On closer inspection her pants aren’t really that exciting. Plus the join lines at her legs are a little too visible for my liking.

There’s also the horrid orange stain.

I definitely prefer her with the skirt on. It was a mini-skirt already, so by being able to remove it we’re not gaining all that much. Plus it’s an absolute pain to take off. Now that she’s reassembled on my desk again I probably won’t be trying to pull her in half anytime soon.

Actually since we’re inspect her nether regions now is as good a time as any to inspect some of her other details. Namely her huge twintails. They’ve been shaded beautifully and sculpted such that they look like voluminous hair. The loose strands and antenna have a sharp clean finish as opposed to looking like stray plastic left over from manufacture. She also has two bells tying each twintail in place which again have a shiny clean finish.

Her red boots are also nicely detailed. They’re an odd shape for shoe ware, very square-ish. Her base is a black octagon with golden flower patterns running round the edges – the very flower pattern that should have been on her hammer. The front facing edge has Samurai Girl written in Kanji (+ something else) on it. For mounting her on the base her shoes have 2 big pegs at the front which slip into matching holes in the base. As a result she stands perfectly stable with little chance of leaning.

One thing that I think may bother Naoe fans is her face. She doesn’t really look like the Naoe we know and love from the anime. And she’s not really anything like her original concept art. It’s a good job then I think her face looks beautiful for this figure rendition of her.

The orange eyes are nice and bright. In fact the same can be said for most of her colouring. Everything is saturated and bright looking which is something I like. Maybe with darker pupils she could have had more impact.

1920 x 1280 || 1920 x 1080

Her breasts are a nice shape and size as well. Not too big and not too small – just right :D .

The thing I like most about cast-off figures is trying to find a nice looking combination somewhere between fully clothed and fully cast-off. And Naoe does not disappoint in this regard. She has removable parts that can be put back on in any order. My favourite is this one – the unbuttoned shirt look. Since her shirt is flexible you can potentially put it in any position – another reason why more cast-off figure manufacturers should move to this flexible material.

So here’s some open shirt goodness to enjoy.

Sometimes the partial cast-off looks more seductive than a fully nude cast-off. I wish more figures opted for the open shirt look. Open coats, open shirts, they all look great in my opinion.

The back of her skirt also has this metal like chain tucked away. Heh, maybe it’s the missing chain from her hammer. You can only really see it when the hammer isn’t in the way.

Not having the tie in place gives full view of Naoes’ cleavage.

So to wrap this up then, hopefully you can tell by the number of photos posted I really like this figure of Naoe Kanetsugu. She’s got everything I enjoy about cast-off figures – multiple states of cast-off that can be displayed. I’ll be displaying Naoe as seen in these last set of photos – with the unbuttoned shirt. There’s no real defects in terms of manufacture/paint finish to speak of – just the odd minor detail in her character design that’s been omitted. I did have trouble with the skirt cast-off and as a result it’s left a mark. But if you ask me the skirt cast-off is rather boring so to me it’s not that big an issue.

I might actually like this version of Naoe more than Alters’ upcoming rendition. Being able to customise her appearance is really nice, but then Alter do make really high quality looking figures. Plus I like the pose of this version more than Alters forward leaning pose. I’ll wait and see how the Alter one turns out though before passing judgment.

I’m glad Naoe turned out well. The Alpha Max baddies I got put me off Samurai Girls for a little bit there, so it’s great that I was able to pick up a really nice Naoe. Speaking of Alpha Max, they sure make it difficult for me to stay annoyed at them. Especially when they go and make Sakei Ai from Fault!!. She’s mighty tempting despite me not wanting to buy Alpha Max again.

Anyway enough rambling, I’ll leave you with some more wallpapers to enjoy.

Also be sure to check out this review of her over at figure.fm.

  1. Naoe Kanetsugu was so funny and adorable in the anime, the beach episode with her was just hilarious XD

Mhh the only thing that bothers me about this figure adaption a bit is the face. I think they wanted to create a glowing eyes effect, which looks cool, but it is not really the right thing for moe lovers like me ^^.
I would have prefered to see her with a normal darker eyecolor and some blushmarks =)

Aside from that I like what I see here, Penguin Parade gave her a good and interesting design. For a rather unknown company they did a good job. The color combinations appear to be very well done, I especially like the bright purple hair. Also the other small details of her outfit look great, the gloves and also the shoes are really cool.

The different cast-off stages are a nice bonus, the open skirt without necktie looks really sexy. Weren’t her boobs supposed to be at least 2 cups bigger in the anime? Nevertheless she has a nice petite body with a nice butt ;0

Im glad to see that you are satisfied with her outcome, your pictures of her turned out very well, I really like 34,74,97,98 and 114. I recently…, or better said yesterday I’ve ordered ALTERS Naoe at a local shop. In the end I couldn’t resist the happy face and the short skirt which doesn’t seem to cover anything XD

    • Naoe is a really likable character, it’s a shame she started to fade from attention towards the final few episodes of the Samurai Girls anime. The bath house cleaning outfit was really funny. I’m not mad enough to pick up that figure version of her though.

Yeah I thought most people wouldn’t be too keen on her face and the glowing orange eyes. I personally really like them. I would however agree she would have looked just as nice with a darker eye colour, and probably darker more defined pupils.

Penguin Parade have done a great job with her I’d say. The heavily saturated colours work well with her largely black & white outfit. There’s lots of neat little details to take in. Her gloves and fingers look particularly nice as you’ve noted – although I didn’t really showcase in the review.

I really do enjoy figures with varying levels of customisation options. Static figures are nice, but sometimes you want to reposition or remove certain parts. Hmm yes I thought her breasts were bigger in the anime as well. Yet her original character illustration has relatively small ones.

Thanks, I really enjoyed taking photos of Naoe so I’m glad you like them too ^^. Good choice deciding to pick up Naoe. I can’t wait to get Alters version of her myself. In fact I also can’t wait for her swimsuit version. Both look to be really nice. It’s a shame they’re not cast-off or customisable.

      • I really want the new swimsuit Naoe figure, since she looks so damn great.
But 9400yen on tokyohunter seems like a lot of money, so Im not 100% sure about purchasing her. Will you order her? or have you already done it :D ?

        • Late reply is late, sorry :( .

Yeah I’m hoping to get the swimsuit Naoe. I put a pre-order in with Tokyo Hunter as soon as she became available so hopefully that’ll be enough to secure her.

  2. I have this figure, too, and I agree with everything you said. Luckily for me, the orange stains after skirt removal aren’t too visible, but they are still present. Similar issues are present on their Jubei figure, oh well… =/

Personally, I prefer PP’s Naoe a little more because of the weight balance between her body and the hammer…. Alter’s looks really nice, too, but I’m a little concerned about the weight distribution. The fact that she’s leaning forward doesn’t help, either.

I think Alpha Max’s quality can be fairly inconsistent… it’s always a gamble when ordering second tier manufacturer’s products. I have their Kriska Barchenowa figure and I was satisfied with the paint job and detailing (well, there weren’t too many details to begin with). I’m also tempted to order Ai, but her pose makes it really difficult for safe display… =P

    • Ah neat, I’m glad to hear you like her as well. The skirt really is a pain to take off. I’m not so keen on their Jubei figure, but it’s a shame she has the same issue. Does Jubeis’ cast-off have various stages or is it just a choice of on/off?

I’m not at all worried about the weight distribution of Alters’ version. I’m confident they’ll handle it properly and leaning won’t be an issue. We’ll see though. It’s just a shame Alter don’t include some form of customisation.

Alpha Max put out some really tempting promo shots, but I dunno, their Samurai Girls put me off them. It’s a shame since as you say Cryska looks really nice, as does their Yui Takamura. I think I’ve convinced myself not to pick up Ai now. Looking at the price was enough to make me decide ‘actually, no’. Speaking of Cryska I’m looking forward to Kotobukiyas’ version with the santa bikini.

      • Jubei’s cast-off parts are somewhat similar to Naoe’s in that you can to remove sections of her clothes (e.g. sleeves, collars, and body) if you choose to, but it’s a pain in the ass (at least for mine) to get her sleeves off.

I agree, I’m probably worrying too much. I haven’t been disappointed by Alter’s products, so I’m sure their Naoe will stand the test of time, too. :)

Haha, Ai is too attractive to ignore. I’m definitely looking forward to your review once you get your hands on her… ;) Me don’t have the courage to buy her, I summed and used up all my courage when I preordered on the bath version of Soniko… XD I think I can at least make up stupid excuses like, “She’s not naked, the bubbles are covering all her private parts properly, and they can’t be removed *wink wink*” =P

Kotobukiya’s Muv-Luv figures are certainly eye-catchers, I can’t get my eyes off their Yui Takamura… Mmmm… those thighs and feet…

        • Looks like Alters Naoe will come with a stand to hold up her hammer, so that should also help with her weight distribution. Not long until I get my hands on her ^^.

Hehe, you might have mis-read me. I’ve decided not to get Ai. Hopefully someone else will though so we can see how she turned out. I must admit I don’t really have any overly sexualised figures on display. Most of mine are cast-off which I have displayed either fully clothed or half-clothed. One day though, one day I’ll get a ‘dangerous’ figure  , just not from Alpha Max.

Kotobukiyas’ Yui looks great I agree, hopefully she turns out just like the previews have shown her.

  3. It sounds like Naoe’s shirt is made out of some kind of mix between rubber and plastic. Kotobukiya’s Maxima Enfield figure has a similar type of material but it’s not cast-off.

I actually thought Naoe’s boobs looked kinda like they were glued on, but otherwise I liked the sculpt of her body. Those orange stains are just horrible, it’s a good thing you like her half-clothed; I know I’d be furious if I got a figure like that.

I saw that Saeki figure too. She’s definitely tempting, but not enough for me to get her. If they release one of Mio though, I’d probably pull out my wallet.

    • Yeah the shirt is flexible like rubber, but not as sticky or flimsy. But then I guess it depends on the rubber we’re talking about. My materials science knowledge is limited to does it conduct or not. It would be nice to see figma with this material, actually I think some of the recent ones are using something similar. That way you wouldn’t have rigid clothing and maybe be able to pull off more poses.

Ha, I can see that a bit too now. You can probably blame my lighting for making it look more like her boobs are glued on. The stains aren’t nice no, although I imagine you can clean them up using the usual paint removal techniques. And as you say, since I prefer her with the skirt on I’m not really that bothered by it.

I’ve decided not to pick up Ai in the end. The price is too much versus the risk for me. If it wasn’t Alpha Max I’d probably have went ahead with a pre-order. Maybe if someone presents a really nice review of her I’ll reconsider, but until then I’ll save that money for a better figure ^^.

  4. Every now and then some interesting figure comes from the lesser known companies. I’d probably say that I prefer this rendition to Alter’s now released first version thanks to a less exaggerated face and that trinity of the stomach, skirt and holy thighs. The eyes may indeed have looked better with darker pupils but the orange does well with all that purple surrounding them.

I tend to rant about cast-off versions in where the only intent is to sell more figures thanks to flesh obsession. If an appearance doesn’t add anything unique and fitting to the figure I’d rather see it skipped completely. What does work for Naoe in my opinion is the semi cast-off, something you’ve captured very well in a shot like #117. It does indeed look like she’s stretching her arms towards the sky thanks to the chosen angle, and while it looks like she’s about to pop, nothing comes falling out. This gives her a more sexy look without losing any of the figure’s original charms. The subtle light on her chest and the more defined light on the face makes me focus on her facial expression before my eyes start wandering over the rest of the body. I much prefer this artistic approach to figure reviews over labia to the face which are a dime a dozen.

It’s a shame about the orange that’s festering her lovely lower back which I guess is a downside to companies with less quality control, hopefully it’s not bothering you too much when looking at her from outside the lens. I wonder if you’re able to resist the other two Naoe figures from Alter, they both look good and the exclusive one has a most peculiar bikini bottom. I’m quite fond of the pose presented in http://www.hobbyjapan.co.jp/ltd_items/hj20120201/006.jpg as well.

    • When deciding whether to pick up a figure or not the manufacturer is fairly low on my list of priorities. So I’m usually on the look out for characters I like as opposed to ‘what do Alter(etc) have today’. I’ve got Alters’ Naoe sitting in her box next to me and I must say both versions of Naoe have they’re pros and cons. Although I probably won’t be getting a chance to open Alter Naoe until the end of the month because I’m too busy with other things :( . (+ the reason for my very delayed reply, sorry). Ah you’re right, the orange & purple contrast here is really nice. It helps focus your attention on her beautiful face.

I somewhat feel the same about cast-off, it has to add some sort of value. Pointless skirt cast-off is really stupid I find, Kotobukiya Kuroko is a recent example of this. I guess to an extent Zigz Toys Sei is kind of like this, since you only have the option of cast on/cast off and the cast-off doesn’t add all that much.

Haha, I’m not really sure it was a conscious decision to light her face, I was really just focusing on trying to capture her appearance at many different angles with a central focus on her face. The arms stretching towards the sky looks really nice and I don’t think it was the primary goal Penguin Parade had in mind when going with the pose they put her in. I’d love to see more figures with poses like this – different ways of viewing them. It’s a shame the mechanism for unclipping her shirt has that rectangle of plastic left hanging out, if that was hidden she’d look just that little bit better I think.

The orange stains don’t bother me since I’ll be keeping her skirt on. The only Naoe figure I’ve resisted is the amiami one with her goofy pool cleaning outfit, milk bottle glasses and broom. I’m really looking forward to Alters swimsuit version. It’s a different bikini style from the usual. The colour is also interesting – cyan with black rose shaped strings. The roller skates are also interesting, although with her kneeling pose they’re unfortunately not the main focus.

  5. Wow, she’s an incredible figure. I really like all her things, like the gourd and stuff; there is so much detail in them, and they give the figure a nice complexity. Also, lover her eyes.

Anyway, as usual, I prefer figures with all their costumes on, but for this one, I actually kind of like the half dressed look too.

    • She is a great figure I agree, I’m really happy I picked her up. There’s so many parts to her outfit to enjoy. Although I’ll admit right now the Alter version of her has done a better job of detailing these items, so that’s something to look forward to. Yep I too like the bright orange eyes, they look very different from the rest of me figure collection, in a good way.

The half dressed look is always a favourite for me, but her fully clothed version is equally interesting to look at. The full cast-off is a nice option, but it’s an option I typically don’t choose to display my figures with.

  6. Wow, you must have really liked her to take so many pictures! I got the Alter one a week ago and I’ll have to admit, I do like her a bit better. All the omitted details you mentioned plus a few others like the torii gates and the details in her hammer don’t give quite the punch for me. However, for a Naoe fan, this seems to be a must get and like you said, she has tons of display options with her cast-off. Her pose is great as well, I think that’s the big thing I dislike about the Alter one, that you can’t really see her outfit clearly. Thanks for sharing!

    • I tend to forget how enjoyable taking photos of figures can be (especially recently where I’ve been finding keeping up with blogs more difficult), so I went a bit overboard. After seeing the Alter version I have to agree that the small details really improve her presentation. The hammer in particular as you’ve stated, Alters’ is just flat out superior with the flower patterns and colouring. Although I will say I’m still more partial towards the pose of this Penguin Parade version. The bent over pose of Alters does restrict your ability to viewing her full glory. MegaHouse Queen’s Blade Echidna has a similar issue, although she has the plus of a nice rear on show. If I could combine the good points of the two I’d be very happy :D .

  7. I love your blog! I’ll be following you! Can I interest you on a link exchange? :D

  8. Very nice, but the eyes, why i wonder its so bright. Its like its made out of the sun.

The pose is interesting and inviting to look same goes with that huge ass hammer which i love the details.

    • I can see why some will dislike the eyes of this Naoe. Too bright and no pupils. Yet for some reason I find them oddly captivating. I do wonder how she’d have looked with a more conventional eye colour.

Huge hammer is wicked, it’s a shame it’s not as detailed as it could have been. Plus it’s hidden behind her back at most angles. Still, the pose is really nice.

  9. I kinda like how her eyes are so different from Alter’s figure; she has kind of a demonic, possessed look rather than the cheerful faux-schoolgirl look of the better-known figure. Of course, her revealable rack also gives her a very different appearance from Alter’s version, and it’s nice that she doesn’t look too mis-proportioned with her clothes taken off. Though I guess it helps that she’s got one of those character designs where her head is nearly larger than her torso, so nobody’s going to be too bothered if her head looks a bit large

It’s good to see that a manufacturer not named Alter is capable of making quality figures of the Samurai Girls characters; that series has a helluva lot of mediocre figures from other manufacturers.

    • I really like her eyes as well. There’s just something captivating about the bright orange that immediately draws my attention. It reminds me of Tenshi from Angel Beats a bit – she had bright yellow eyes that had a similar effect. Being able to take her tie/shirt out alone makes a huge difference to her appearance I find. Spices up the school uniform styled outfit she’s wearing.

At first I thought it was just an illusion due to her giant twintails but you’re right, her head is quite large, or wide at least. Looking at my photos + both figures on my desk I’m only now seeing it. Good thing it’s not a ‘cannot unsee’ thing, I still like her :P .

Penguin Parade is a fair alternative if you’re after a cast-off Naoe. Personally I really like her but ultimately I’d have to say it’s Alter who are producing the best Samurai Girls figures. Plus they seem to be going for the whole cast unlike the others who pick’n'choose. I’m looking for to their Gisen, and Charles if they decide to make her.
