Lightning Warrior Raidy 2 – NSFW

For those unaware this is a review of the H Game Lighting Warrior Raidy 2: Temple of Desire. So keep in mind this is for readers over 18.

Raidy 2 title screen

Lightning Warrior Raidy 2: Temple of Desire is the sequel to the first game Lightning Warrior Raidy. Raidy 2 is a h game which mixes in elements from RPGs and dungeon crawlers. The game was developed by ZyX and localised to English by G-Collections.

Lightning Warrior Raidy 2 started shipping just in time for Anime Expo 2010; which was awesome timing for con-goers who were interested in picking up this title. Unfortunately for us who couldn’t get to the expo we had to wait a bit longer. Download versions went live last Wednesday (21/07) almost a full month after physical copies shipped. It wasn’t until Saturday that I finally got to sit down and play this. I managed to finish the main story by Monday, but it looks like there’s a few missing scenes and CG I need to go back and get. I bought my copy from J-list.

Raidy 2 takes off from where the first game left us. Raidy is drudging across a barren desert when she stumbles upon the peaceful village of Lake Blue. However upon arriving at the local Inn she witnesses a bandit attempting to kidnap a female host. Raidy steps in the save the girl and upon doing so learns of a group of bandits abducting the villagers. Raidy, not being one to abandon those in trouble, decides to help save the villagers – and thus her adventure begins.

So, what’s different in Raidy 2?
The first noticeable difference is you start out with a map which allows you to visit various shops or dungeons. The shops include an Inn where you can “rest”; a bar where you can acquire tidbits of information; Potion shop; and an armour/weapons shop. Of particular use is the potion shop since you no longer need to grind monsters to get potions as in first game. The weapons and armour make stuff a bit easier, but what you find lying around dungeons is more than enough to get by.

Next is dungeon navigation. Raidy 1 had a blank map system where I guess they expected you to draw it out on paper. Raidy 2 provides you with a map that fills itself in as you explore. This makes navigation so much easier and more enjoyable.
You’ve still got your usual game mechanics at work when exploring, not much has changed with this. Arrow keys to move, random monsters encounters, hidden chests, invisible walls etc.

Combat has changed a little, in particular Raidys’ special attack. You now consume MP by selecting the “Charge” option – which use 1 turn – and can then select a special attack to use. Charging increases your power bar, the longer you charge the more damage you do. In a way this makes boss battles dead easy; just charge up and blast them.
That’s another point, some boss battles require you to have found a special item to proceed whereas others don’t. If you don’t have the item and encounter the boss you get a game over scene and have to reload.
Boss battles are pretty much the same though – loose and Raidy gets punished, win and Raidy does the punishing.

Some special attacks to use on Evil Shaman monster

Another interesting addition is the weapon/armour system. You will find lots of different armour and weapon to use throughout the adventure – some with strange powers. The way you equip stuff has changed too. You can choose to equip 2 handed swords for more attack, dual wield swords in left and right hands or hold a shield for extra defense. There’s also a magic item slow for any “other” items picked up along the way.

Probably my favourite addition to Raidy 2 is the animated scenes. They’re not fantastic, mostly circular motion on loop, but it’s better than a static shot. However not all the CG is animated, and it seems to peter out towards the end of the game. Although I’m still missing some CG so maybe there’s more that I’ve missed. Wouldn’t it be awesome if what was being described actually appeared on the CG animated?

The game is probably 3 times longer than the first as has been quoted. The first took a day to finish, this one three days – and I’ve still got stuff to unlock. There’s a total of 3 dungeons with the 2nd being the longest by far.
Oh that’s a thing. At the end of Raidy 1 you got to go back and collect all the game over CG you missed – no such luck in this one. Just got to save often across multiple files. Or loose, reload, win.

This game houses 6 pages of CG (including all monsters CG) and 3 pages of re-playable events – so there’s a fair bit to collect. I really liked the artwork from the first game; and the second does not disappoint. There’s loads of new monsters to face – and some from the first game make a come back. My favourite has to be the Nightmare – when she’s not draining your MP.

Nightmare, so cute :D

However there are a few short comings (ah ha -.-) with the sequel. The most noticeable being the voice recordings. They sound like someone took an old magnetic tape, played it back and recorded it by holding a microphone up to the speaker. It’s terrible – so I switched all voices off while playing. The voiced scenes also seems to be randomly applied to some scenes and not to others; so might as well just switch it off.
It should be noted the music and effects are still fine though, so you don’t need to play in total silence.

There’s also quite a lot of typos throughout the game, with more appearing as you approach the end. I also encountered a text bug on the map on the first floor of the 3rd dungeon, not a biggie though. There’s also one instance where texts runs outside the text box and get stuck there for the whole dialogue. Again it doesn’t obstruct anything, it just looks messy.

Arrgh

Overall I enjoyed Raidy 2 and would recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the first game. It’s kept me occupied from start to finish and I’m looking forward to finishing off all the CG. Some of the monsters look really nice and the new additions such as animation and the new map mechanic make the experience much more enjoyable. And Raidy is such an awesome heroine it’s great to see her back in this sequel.
However I cannot recommend this game to everyone, mainly due to the content of the h scenes. They can be quite “heavy” and I imagine are not everyones cup of tea. So if you plan on getting Raidy 2 best find out first what you are getting yourself in to.

  1. Great review. I bought the first Raidy quite a long time ago and I had been waiting for Raidy 2 for so long I started to get disinterested in the whole idea. I definitely need to pick this up and give it a play though. I remember the H scenes were a wee bit heavy at times but it was a unique dungeon crawler. Looking forward to playing this eventually. Looks like the art that I loved is still in tact. It’s only a bit of a shame that the game isn’t even longer. Perhaps we’ll get a Raidy 3 some day?

  2. I havent played none of the game so i cant really say much, i know my friend played raidy 2 and liked it, maybe i should try it out!

  3. J-list has included several ads for this game with stuff they’ve sent to me. Now I actually know what it is :)

  4. @Persocom:
    Thanks :D .
Hopefully you’ll enjoy it when you get a chance to give it a go. The translation seemed to take forever. I first played Raidy 1 last year and it looked like the Raidy 2 translation project had been on-going long before that.
There looks as though a Raidy 3 was being developed, but the page on ZyX hasn’t been updated since 2008 – so I guess it’s dead.

    @Fabrice:
If you get a chance and want to – give it a go.

    @Nopy:
It’s been their top selling H game since it released. I think they even had banner ads for it way before it was translated  .

  5. I bought this game and beat it a week or so ago, it was a lot of fun but man were there a ton of typos. It’s like they didn’t do a playtest at all. The lesbian rape is awesome, though, and since that’s what you play the game for, I’ve got no serious complaints.

I wonder if ZyX will ever complete the third game? The game’s webpage hasn’t been updated since mid-2008.

    • Yeah, loads of typos. I think I noticed them more on my second playthrough. It gets worse towards the end. You get the feeling they just gave up and rushed it out.

Doesn’t look too promising for Raidy 3.

  6. The graphics and the characters look really good. But “heavy” content is something I try to avoid, so it’s probably not for me.

  7. @ Yi & softz:
Yeah probably best avoid this one. Although the character artworks are really nice, some of the stuff they have them do makes you o.O

  8. I’m looking for this game since I played and enjoyed Raidy 1.

  9. I love the fact that three of the bosses of the first game make their reappearance in this. As well as the fact that they are a lot more mellowed down… seems like the things they went through in the first game have had their effect, so to speak…

    • Haha yeah. Now they ask before carrying out their desires. Some of the monsters you fight from the first one also appear which I thought was cool.
